Book Talk

Tiffany King

In the book Red Hill by Jamie McGuire, she talks about the struggles and tragedies that come along with the zombie apocalypse. The book bounces back and forth to the viewpoints of different characters, who all could very well be heroes but really, they’re all just trying to save their self and their loved ones from the people they would have considered friends.

Scarlet: Scarlet in the book is the first character we are introduced to. She works at a hospital and her two girls are her life. There is something wrong that is going on and the hospital is over flowing with people with this type of disease. Scarlet thinks about her girls and does her best to leave, she has to get to them. The phone lines are down and Scarlet begins to panic. Knowing that the girls are with their father going to an event that he wanted to take them to, she begins to wonder even more if they are okay. On her rush to her girls she realizes that the gates into town are blocked by men with guns, she comes to think that they aren’t even trained that they are just scared men with guns. On her “adventure” she meets a man in the same situation she is in. He wants to get to his sister and his nephew. Together they come up with a plan to sneak into this town, they are successful and the town seems dead, nobody in sight and this only makes it more stressful for scarlet. She goes to Andrews’s house and writes a note to him and the girls to meet her at the red hill. Scarlet soon comes to realize that it’s happening, it’s the end of the world.

Andrew: Andrew is a father who is almost in the same situation as Scarlet. He is a father and his daughter is his world. Although Andrew and his wife are still together (he thinks), he feels like a single father. We learn about the back story between Andrew and his wife, she isn’t the mother type. She stays home all day and sits on her computer all day, she doesn’t pay attention to Andrew or Zoe, their daughter. As Andrew is waiting for his daughter to be released from school he notices all of the moms rushing in to grab their kids and get out of there. He’s listening to the radio and he knows something isn’t right. He runs in and pulls Zoe out of class. On their way back home he tries to keep zoe calm and try to explain it to her in a way that won

Skeeter and Jill: skeeter is Andrews’s brother in law, somehow some way, they all end up in the same place. After skeeter’s wife Jill passes away, he is alone and fighting zombies on his own. He finds this house and stays there for safety. When Scarlet and her crew need a place to stay for the night they stumble upon skeeter. Skeeter is so happy to hear that scarlet and her friends know Andrew and Zoe, they take him back to his family and realize that they all have seen each other at least once. Or have been in the same place and have met the same people.

Miranda and Ashley: These girls are the ones that hold my heart throughout the entire book. They have been through so much already and when they finally reach their safety place and are waiting for their dad to come out and hug them, protect them and be what their father should be, they realize that he’s dead. They find their ways to coping with the death of their father and the loss of their mother as well but what makes things worse is that Ashley’s boyfriend Cooper is there with her and not only does she have to deal with the death of her father she has to deal with the fact that the love of her life has died right in front of her. Miranda on the other hand is in a different scenario, her boyfriend Bryce, who she thought she had been in love with for a very long time kind of turns to her enemy when she gains new feelings for the guy that they have rescued, Joey.

Abby Abernathy is the main character in the book, Beautiful Disaster. Abby does not like attention, at all. She tries to stay quiet and sort of out of everybody’s way. That is until she caught Travis Maddox’s attention. Travis is the campus’s “bad boy”, he gets all the girls and he fights in random basements for a living. Until he meets Abby.
Most people can see this becoming a disaster. Abby, the innocent smart good looking new-ish girl, ending up with Travis. When Abby first meets travis, she is disgusted by him. She doesn’t like the way he treats girls and has sort of a charm to him that she absolutely despises. Travis will not leave Abby alone, when she finally agrees to go out with him they decide they can be friends, but when Abby’s best friend America forces her to move in with Travis and his roommate Shepley (America’s boyfriend) things get a bit complicated.
Abby and Travis go through their time living together trying to fight their feelings. Travis starts to learn that Abby isn’t as innocent as she comes off to be and he is determined to find out the truth. Abby learns that Travis isn’t such a bad guy after all, and that he really cares about her even if he tries to hide it. Throughout their ups and downs Travis and Abby realize that it’s not one another that makes their relationship worth something, it’s them being together.

  1. Abby Abernathy –  Abby is the type of girl that likes to keep to herself, she is afraid of her past and nobody really understands why, except her best friend America. Abby is constantly worrying about what people are thinking about her. When travis starts to show interest in Abby she kind of pushes him away because she’s afraid of what people are saying about their friendship. Travis eventually helps her over come that fear. Travis also saves Abby’s life in a way. While trying to help her father she almost gets herself killed but Travis was right there by her side and he was not letting anything bad happen to her
  2. Travis “Maddog” Maddox- Travis seems satisfied with his life. He hooks up with random girls, throws them to the side when he’s finished and he’s used to having girls just hang all over him. When he is shut down by Abby time after time he has to get to know her more. Travis has been needing someone in his life to mean something to him like his mother did before she died. Abby is that girl, Travis instantly falls in love with her and even though Abby doesn’t know it, Travis can’t live without her. He finds everything he needs in one girl that doesn’t take any of his crap and keeps him in line. He finds out really quick that Abby isn’t as innocent as she seems which only makes her more irresistible to him.
  3. Shepley- Shepley is Travis’s cousin also his bestfriend. They live together and he is also the reason that Travis meets Abby. Shepley is dating America, Abby’s best friend and he is absolutely terrified that if Travis does something stupid to mess things up with Abby that things might be bad for him and America. America tries and tries to convince him that it won’t happen but it does. Multiple times, but still Shepley is supportive and helpful to his cousin adn his relationship. He loves Travis and Abby together because no fighting means no taking sides and that means that him and America are just as happy
  4. America- Abby’s best friend since before they went to college. Abby practically lived with America and nothing would break them apart. Not even boys. America was always looking out for Abby’s best interest and she doesn’t let anyone get in the way of that. not even Shepley and she’s not even afraid to stand between her and Travis if he’s being unfair. She loves her boyfriend but she loves her best friend even more and she knows that the best thing for Abby is to be with Travis, she does her very best to make sure that happens and that Abby is safe and happy
  5. Surviving- Throughout the book Abby and Travis’s relationship face some pretty difficult things. They go through a fire, break ups, Abby dating someone else, Travis’s “fan girls” but in the end they realize that they couldn’t have made it through any of the tragedies that have happened without each other. They are stronger as a couple and they should and will stay that way. It’s safer for everyone.

Memoir:
In my opinion, a book should be mostly true if it is based on a true story. I understand that some parts may be exaggerated and i think that's okay as long as the story doesn't change. I don't even think that the scene should change much, you can add as much detail to a story as you want but don't change what actually happened.
I think that "half-truths" are okay as long as you don't claim that the book is a true story. if you're going to make up half of a story then you should just make up the other half too because it's just not the same.
I don't see the point in having a line between generes. Most authors feel that their books are something different than the genres readers choose them for anyways. personally i read nicholas sparks books because i am a hopeless romantic and i love reading about the love stories he comes up with. He doesn't believe that his books should be labeled as romance books but it doesn't stop me from reading them as romantics. i think that if someone chooses a book to read it's because they like the idea of the concept, i feel like most people don't just look for certain genres otherwise they wouldn't have any difference in what they are reading and to me that just takes the purpose away.

Post 3 Book One Project

If I stay:
If I stay now has a CD! Buy the cd to get the full experience!!

In the book, we know that Mia is very into her music. Her mother and father are into their music too. Mia feels like she is the odd one out in her family. She loves her music but her parents and even her boyfriend are into very different types of music. She is into her cello and classical music where as her parents fell in love with the sounds of rock and roll. Mia meets Adam, who becomes her boyfriend through their love of music, share this CD with the people you love!

Songs include the songs that are sang by Mia's father. He talks about how his band was his life, other than Mia's mother of course. Mia's father changes a lot in the story. We are introduced to his as kind of a simple man, kind of how you expect a father to be. He is a great man and he takes his family seriously. Mia kind of felt bad for it, she thought that she was the reason her father gave up his music. He took the time to explain to her that she was not the reason, the reason was that he cared too much about his family and wanted to be home with Mia and her mother Mia's little brother Teddy.

The most heart warming music related scene in the book is when Adam sings to her. Adam doesn't know what to do in this situation, it's all so unreal to him. Mia means the world to him. They weren't a normal couple, he was the person that was very social, everyone knows him and he has a lot of friends. Mia on the other hand is the type of girl that would rather only have one friend, at first they weren't even friends. They actually hated each other until they realized that they would have to be friends eventually considering they were always paired up and everyone just assumed they were friends anyways. Adam and Kim find their self doing crazy things so they can see their friend.

This cd carries all of the emotions that come with the story, it may make you cry even. Buy the cd and you will not regret it!
